James and
Charlotte Gauntlett in front of their grocery store, general
store, and shoe store in Mooreville.

This picture
was taken in the 1880's or 1890's in York Township, Washtenaw
county, Michigan. The town of Mooreville was a
thriving community at that time. Jim Gauntlett is up front
with his arm on a wood rail. Two unknown children are
hanging around to the right of the store.
Some buckets on
the porch are marked "Candy." Just above the
guitar, a hand-written sign advertises "Lard."
James and
Charlotte had three sons and one daughter. The daughter,
Jennie, is
not in this picture. The sons are, left to right, Elon D.
Gauntlett (with his hand on the horse); then James Gauntlett
hanging onto a guitar; and John Clark Gauntlett in the
background, just behind his father. The woman in the
middle with a white apron is Charlotte Clarke Gauntlett.
Elon went into
the retail business. His brothers James and John both
became medical doctors.
