Charles Palmer died Friday. He left a widow and five children.  Children: Mrs. Bessie Moyer, Mr. Ansyl Palmer, Mrs. Mabel Knaggs of Milan , Mrs. Ada Wilson , Miss Sylvia Palmer.

Daughter Mary (possibly, name Mary hard to read). Age 15.   Son Earl H. 12, name “Earl” is a possible name since handwriting is so poor. Mother in law Alma Whiting, 67, b. NY.

Gershorn Palmer was born Feb. 17, 1838 and died 7-14-1919.  Marble Park cemetery.  His age would have been about 81.

Henry Palmer served as Supervisor of London Tonwship in 1858, 59, 66, and 71. He also served as Justice of the Peace in 1876.

Palmer Lucy

Since last August Mrs. Lucy Clark had been suffering from rheumatism and other ailments and she spent some time at the hospital in Ypsilanti . She returned home and almost immediately was taken with typhoid fever, which resulted in her death Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1920.  Mrs. Lucy Clark was born in Williamston , Mich. , on March 31, 1852. She was the youngest daughter of Dr. Henry Palmer and Mrs. Lucy Palmer.  At the age of five year she moved with her parents to  Holly , Mich. , where they resided for nine years.  In 1866 the family moved to Milan , which place has been their home ever since.  In Sept., 1873 she was united in marriage to Mr. George Clark. She adopted three daughters, and proved a kind and loving mother, ever desiring the best in life for her girls. Miss Eva Palmer preceded her in death, being called to her heavenly ….

Palmer Marie

Glen Edwin Peppers, 27, passed away Friday, January 16, [1941?] at the University Hospital , following a short illness.  He was born in Riverton, Mason County , Oct. 21, 1912.  He was the oldest son of Mae and Thomas Peppers.  He was united in marriage to Marie L. Palmer on May 12, 1933.  They had 4 children, two survive  --   Maurine Mae, and Lee Edwin.  He has made his home around Milan for the past 10 or 12 years.  Burial in Azalia Cemetery .

Mary Annette Palmer died July 25, 1928, according to death certificate.  She was single.  Age 84.  Born Oct. 31, 1843 in Michigan .  Occupation: dressmaker, self employed.  F: Dr. Henry Palmer, b. N.Y.  M: Lucy Mather, b: NY.  Burial in Marble Park .  

Palmer, Mary (Mrs.  Marquis Palmer)

Mrs. Sarah Bogardus of London township was born in Erie county, NY, Sept. 13, 1840.  She came to Michigan with her father in 1857, locating in Newaygo county.  In 1858 she married Marquis Palmer of London township.  He was born in Genesee county, NY in 1826, died 1877.  By this marriage four children were born to them, John, Perry, Orlanda, and Cora. All are living except Cora who died Dec. 17, 1886.  Dec. 22, 1883, Mrs. Palmer married William Bogardus of Milan , whose name she now bears.  (From History of Monroe County, 1913, page 26)

Nancy Palmer was born Sept. 13, 1850 and died 10-1-1924.  From Marble Park Cemetery records.  Her gravestone indicates that her husband was James K. Palmer 1843-1925.  Others in this “strip” of gravestones:  Helen B., Myrtle E., William S., Lydia C. Palmer.

Sarah J. Palmer, 40, occupation “farming,” answered the London twp census in 1880.  She was b. NY. Her father was b. Mass. And mother b. VT. Son, John, 21, farm laborer, b. MI. Son Perry, 19, assists at home on farm. Daughter Cora, 16, b. MI, works as a domestic servant. Son Orlando , 10.

Walter E. Palmer died Sept. 12, 1950 at age 74. He was born 3-22-1876. Lived at 230 W. Main . Occupation: Embalmer.  Father: George Palmer. Mother: Frances , last name not known.  Informant: Jennie Palmer.  London cemetery.

William C. Palmer died Sept. 30, 1917 according to Monroe County death records, book C page 156, Milan records.  He was age 74 years, 4 months, 25 days.  (So he was born about May 26, 1843).  He was a retired farmer.  He was born in NJ.  Father: Ishmael Palmer, mother Susan Rosilan.

A. H. Parsons was the Milan township supervisor in 1855 and 1856.  

Patterson Charles

Charles E. Patterson elected Clerk of Village of Milan on March 19, 1898.  Same, 1899.  

Patterson Charles

Charles E. Patterson, 72, a grocer in MIlna for 44 years, died at his home Nov. 11, 1938. He was a member of the Milan school board many years, a trustee of the Baptist Church and active in other civic affairs. He came to Milan aboaut 48 years ago. His wife, Gertrude and one daughter, Mrs. Maurine Sutenfield of Chicago survive.

Patterson Gertrude

Mrs.Charles Patterson, lifelong resident of Milan, 72 years old, died at her home on W. Main St. on Aug. 16 [1940].  She was Gertrude C. Hitchcock before her marriage and was the daughter of the late Alonzo and Elizabeth Dexter Hitchcock. She was born April 11, 1868, in York twp. and was married To Mr. Patterson in Milan May 23, 1889. Mr. Patterson was a merchant inMilan for many years, and died Nov. 10, 1938. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. George Suttenfield of Milan , and a half-brother, Arlie Hitchcock of Ann Arbor . Burial at Highland cemetery in Ypsilanti .

Peters Ernest

Ernest Peters, known as “Pete,” was in the”Retail Produce” business according to a Rotary club membership roster dated Jan. 4, 1949.  His residence was not indicated.

Phillips Millard P. Jr.

Millard Parlia Phillips Jr. bought a jewelry store on E. Main St. in Milan , in 1915. The store had previously been operated by Mr. Kleckner.  Millard Jr. was born Oct. 7, 1893, the son of Millard Parlia Phillips Sr. and Clara Belle Wilcox Phillips.  Millard Jr. was married to Maurine Kelsey Miller on Nov. 14, 1922.  His occupation: jeweler.  Millard Jr. and Maurine had one child and lived at 258 Ideal St. in Milan .  Millard Jr. developed some land that had been owned by his mother, Clara Wilcox, and was the original homestead of Lewis A. Wilcox.  Millard Jr. died Oct. 27, 1970.  Source:  Phillips genealogy book at Milan Area Public Library.

Millard Parlia Phillips, Sr. was born Oct. 11, 1855, the son of Parlia Phillips and Mary Warner Phillips. Millard Sr. was married Oct. 8, 1884.  Died July 10, 1926.  Occupation: Farmer. Religion: Baptist. Wife’s name: Clara Belle Wilcox.  Millard Sr. and Clara Belle had two children:  Millard Parlia Phillips Jr. and Lucy May Phillips Braman.  Source: Phillips genealogy book at Milan Area Public Library.

Pickett

One of the Pickett boys was killed while welding a gasoline tank.  He was working at a gas station on West Main , north side of the street.  Joe Sinkule had a Ford dealership in that location for a while.  The Picket boy who died, was the son of Melvin Pickett.

Melvin Pickett had a Kaiser Frasier dealership at 64 West Main .  The dealership was there in the 50’s, as recalled by Jerry Cook.

Pool Claud

Claud Pool died Jan. 17, 1917.  He was born July 24, 1847.  Died of cancer of the stomach.  His occupation was day laborer.  He was born in Michigan .  His father was Kilpatrick.  Mother, Smith, both born in Michigan .  Informant:  Sarah (Pool) Gauntlett.  Buried in Marble Park . Source: death record, Washtenaw County side of Milan .  [Note: probably his father was an older brother of John Pool.  No specific information is available about John Pool’s brothers or sisters but I believe Claud was Sarah’s cousin.]

John Pool, of London township, was born in Lodi township, Michigan , July 22, 1831. On August 29, 1857, he married Mary A Kidder. Source: History of Washtenaw County .

John Pool served as constable in London Township during the year 1888.

Mary Kidder Pool was born Oct. 28, 1841 and died July 13, 1908.  Buried in Pool cemetery.  

Pool Sally

Sally Pool was probably born June 12, 1794. She and her husband Thomas were the parents of John Pool.  Sally died Sept. 20, 1882.

Oct. 31, 1891, death of John Pool’s sister, Sally Overacker, age 67.  She was probably born about 1824.  She was a widow.  Her father was Thomas Pool, her mother was Sally.

Sarah

Sarah Pool was born in Milan township on March 16, 1870.  Daughter of John and Mary Pool of London township.  She married Archibald Gauntlett in 1907.  They lived on W. Main where the movie theater later was built.  She had rooming house business, had up to 100 people come to her home for chicken dinner on Sundays.  She died in 1943.

Thomas I. Pool was born 1795.  He died April 22, 1854.  Buried in Pool (Townsend) cemetery.  He and Sally were the parents of John Pool.

Dayle Potter worked as “Plastics Engineer” and lived at 105 First St. , according to a Rotary club membership roster dated Jan. 4, 1949.

Isaac Potter, 68, farmer, b. Conn. according to London twp census of 1880.  Wife Betsey 63 b. VT. Step daughter Lualia 24 b. MI. Grand daughter Almeda J., 16, works as domestic servant, she was b. NY. Grand daughter Julia, 14, “Domestic,” b. NY.

Pullen Charles

Charles Pullen was b. May 1845 in MI and was 55 when the census was taken in 1900. He lived in Village of Milan on Monroe county side. Occupation: postmaster. His parents were both b. in NY.  He owns his home free and clear.  Lives with his wife, Annie, b. Sept. 1859, age 40. She has 8 children, all are still living.

     

PUTNAM family

Putnam,
A. E.

Alfred E. Putnam and his wife Alice was living in Sigourney , Iowa in 1912.  They received a post card that year from their close friends A. B. Smith and his wife Elmina McNeill, who were in California .  The Smiths referred to themselves as “Al” and “Mina.”  Alfred and Alice Putnam had four sons:  (1) Harold McNeill Putnam b. Sept. 7, 1889; (2) Nathan Clyde Putnam b. Nov. 18, 1893; (3) John Alfred Putnam, b. May 1, 1901; and (4) Paul Albert Putnam, b. June 16, 1908. 

Putnam Alfred

Alfred Emory Putnam, born in Milan April 26, 1866.  He was only 14 years old in 1881 when he launched the new “Milan Leader” newspaper.  Alfred was partners with Albert B. Smith.  In March, 1898, he made an unsuccessful run for President of Milan village, losing out to Andrew D. Jackson.

Alfred E. Putnam and Alice S. McNeill, both of Milan , were married at the home of the bride, on First Street , on Dec. 30, 1888.  Rev. J. W. McGregor officiated.  Source: Milan Leader newspaper, Jan. 4, 1889.

A. E.

Alfred Emory Putnam, son of Nathan and Hannah Putnam, was born April 26, 1866 in Milan , Monroe County . Married Dec. 30, 1888 to Alice Stannard McNeill.  (Some people think her name was Standard but it was really Stannard.)  He was co-founder of the Milan Leader newspaper, and operated a department store on Wabash Street in Milan .  He invented a device that would measure bolts of cloth without unwinding all the material.  A. E. Putnam died Nov.10, 1941 in Washington , Wash. County, Iowa .

Alice and Alfred Putnam had the following children:  (1) Harold McNeill Putnam Sept. 7, 1889; (2) Nathan Clyde Putnam, b. Nov. 18, 1893; (3) John Alfred Putnam, b. May 1, 1901; (4) Paul Albert Putnam b. June 16, 1908.

Putnam Alice

Alfred Emory Putnam married Alice Stannard McNeill Dec.30, 1888 at her home on First St. in Milan .  She was born in Dec. 1863 in Petersburg , Mich. or Dundee perhaps. She died June 26, 1937 in Washington , Iowa , and was buried at Elm Grove Cemetery . Her occupation: Teacher.  Her father: John McNeill. Her mother: Mary Hinsdale, second wife of John McNeill.

Putnam Carrie

John C. Putnam and his second wife, Mary Putnam had a child in 1865.  The child’s name was Carrie E. Putnam.  Carrie was born Aug. 25, 1865 in Milan , Monroe County , and she died Oct. 14, 1867 at the age of 2.

Chloe E. Putnam was born April 29, 1854 in Wilson , Niagara County , NY .  Her parents were John and Lydia Putnam.

Putnam, Clyde

Clyde Putnam was born in Milan in 1893.  Father:  Alfred E. Putnam.  Mother: Alice McNeill Putnam.

Eli Putnam, 41, had a 2nd marriage to Kate Wilson, 43, on Dec. 19, 1895. Eli lived in Findley Ohio , he was a manufacturer.  His father: David Putnam, mother: Elizabeth Shoup.  Kate lived in Toledo and was married before. Probably not related to Milan Putnams.

Putnam, George

George Putnam, 20, of Dundee, a painter, was married Jan. 4, 1885 in Petersburg . His wife: Eva Bigelow. Marriage performed by J. H. Gage, justice of peace. Probably not related.  

Putnam Hannah

Nathan Curtis Putnam married Hannah Mariah Bunce Jan. 1, 1865.  She was born Dec. 25, 1843, in London township, Monroe County Michigan. She died October 11, 1922 in Washington , Washington County , Iowa , and she was buried in Marble Park Cemetery in Milan .  Hannah Bunce was the daughter of John Bunce (Buntz) and Fanny Sacket.  Hannah and Nathan Putnam had two children, Alfred Emory Putnam and Alice Putnam (Hill).
