W. P. Mrs. |
Mrs. W. P. Lamkin [Minnie Sanford or Sandford] died Friday evening, Feb. 11, 1910, at a hospital in Ann Arbor. The news was a surprise and shock. She was in poor health for three years, but no one expected her to die. A few days before she died, she underwent an operation. She seemed to be doing well, then suddenly she took a turn for the worse [paraphrasing, as the newspaper is full of schmaltzy language]. Those present at the death were her husband and daughter, “the aged mother, Mrs. Geo. Marken and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Sanford.” Source: front page newspaper story, probably Milan Leader, highly dramatic. Note: the woman who died was Minnie Sandford, first wife of Wila P. Lamkin. Wila P. Lamkin died Thursday October 13, 1932. He was born in Raisinville Aug. 4, 1861. He lived a few months past 71. He moved into the Village of Milan as a young man. His parents were Benjamin and Eunice Lamkin, pioneer settlers in this section of the state. He married Minnie Sanford who died in Sept. 1910. They had one daughter. Wila later married Stella Hanson, who had a daughter from a previous marriage-- Mrs. Steven Early. Wila is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mable Trueblood of Granite City, Illinois. Funeral was held at the home on Wabash by Rev. Peter Soudah of People’s Church. Burial at Marble Park cemetery. He was highly involved in early business ventures in the Village of Milan. He was superintendent in charge of purchasing pipe for the first water works installation. He installed a standpipe for water to sprinkle the village streets (dirt roads). “Mr. Lamkin was always known as a mechanical genius and although without the privilege of college instruction in mechanics and electricity, was considered one of the foremost pioneers in electrical development in this section of the state. Mr. Lamkin established the first electrical plant in Milan. The first plant was operated by a series of three small engines and was developed to the extent that when the Detroit Edison Company took over the plant and were granted a franchise in Milan, the plant was fully equipped and supplying power and light to the growing community. The stack for the electrical plant which is 85 feet high still stands and was the first all concrete smoke stack to be built in a small town. The stack will probably stand for many years as a monument to the mechanical genius of its builder. Mr. Lamkin built many of the homes around Milan and for many years was also in the lumber business, a vocation he followed to his untimely death. He was also associated in the dairy business here, in the making of butter and ice cream.” Source: Obit. |
