Jackson Andrew

Andrew D. Jackson was born in Seneca township, Ontario county, NY July 15, 1841. He died Feb. 8, 1912, aged 70 years, 6 months and 23 days.  He came to Michigan with his parents at age 12.  They went to a farm in York township.  He was baptized in Wheeler Creek and joined York Baptist Church .  Soon after he moved to Chesaning , Mich for about five years and returned to York township. He was superintendent of Sunday School there, and later at Milan Baptist Church . On Aug.30, 1862, he was 21, and joined Co. G. Sixth Mich. Cavalry. He fought in Gettysburg and other battles, etc., then on Sept. 16, 1863 he was captured and taken to Libby prison. Later that month he was paroled and exchanged.  Etc.  He stayed in the military after Lee’s surrender April 9 1865. Then he fought the Indians out west, etc.   Nov. 18, 1869 he married Frances Anne Richards.  They had a son, Frank. The deceased alternated between living on his farm, and living in Milan (village?).  His wife died about 1906.  He had two sisters, Mrs. Oscar Stimpson of Saline and Mrs. James McMullen of Milan ; two brothers, John of Milan and Charles of Virginia, Minn.   Source:  obituary.

Jackson Andrew E.

Andrew D. Jackson was born in Seneca , Ontario county, New York on July 14, 1841.  His parents were Charles and Clarisse (Owen) Jackson.   [See “Charles Jackson” below.] 
He attended public schools until age 18, then worked as a farmer. In 1884 he got a job as a carpenter and joiner. He worked in the building trades until 1900, then returned to farming.  He took time out to enlist August 30, 1862, joining Co. G, 6th Mich. Cavalry. He fought at Gettysburg , Cold Harbor, Winchester and Cedar Creek. He was a corporal when he was discharged Dec. 5, 1865.
He married Frances A. Richards Nov. 18, 1869. Her parents, William and Elizabeth Richards of York Twp, were both born in England . Andrew and Frances adopted a son, Frank D.  On April 12, 1904, Francis died after being ill two years.  She was buried in York cemetery with her parents and other relatives.
Andrew was a Republican and belonged to the Baptist church.  He is an active member of the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic). He was a justice of the peace for one term, clerk of York Township for three terms, assessor for one term, councilman of the Village of Milan for three terms, and Milan village president for one term. Jackson Andrew

Andrew D. Jackson was born in Ontario county, NY, July 16, 1841.  (history of Monroe County , page 37).  He enlisted, and was discharged December 1865.  On November 18, 1868, he married Frances A. Richards, of York (township) and they have no children of their own, so they adopted a son.  Moved to Milan village in 1884.  He has been a town clerk of York township.  Is an assessor of Milan .  He served as a justice of the peace at York .  

Jackson Charles

Charles Jackson came to York township in 1853 from Seneca , Ontario county, NY. He was a farmer. He bought 80 acres.  He died in the 1860’s.  His wife, Clarisse (Owen) Jackson, was a Connecticut native.  She died Jan. 27, 1879. Their sons were: William J.; Andrew D.; John A., a mechanic of Milan ; and Charles M., who is living in Virginia , Minnesota [in 1906]. The daughters are: Mary J. Stimpson, wife of Oscar Stimpson of Saline; Arabelle, wife of James McMillan; Alice, the deceased wife of Richard Gauntlett, of Detroit; Mrs. Sylvia C. Blackmer, of Saline, now deceased; Harriet A., the deceased wife of George Nason, of Saginaw, Michigan; Annie, the deceased wife of Spencer R. Rogers, of Pittsfield, Michigan; Eliza J., the deceased wife of James LeBarron of York Township; and Isabelle, now deceased.  Source: Washtenaw County Past and Present, 1906, bio of Andrew Jackson.

Thomas B. Jackson died Dec. 12, 1916 at the age of 82 years, 0 months, and 1 day. Cause: asthma. He was born in Englad. His father was Thomas Jackson, his mother was Sarah Fowler, both of them were born in England .  Source: Washt County death records.

Hiram Jacobs and Eliza S. Childs were married May 26, 1859 at the residence of the Bride’s parents.  Witnessed by Thomas Redman and Lodenia (?) Redman.  Signed by R. J. (?) Flervallan (?) minister of the gospel.  Jacobs family bible.

Hiram Jacobs was born March 19, 1834 in “Rasenville” MI. Date of marriage: May 26, 1859.  Died: March 9 or 19, 1906 or 1900 (hard to read).  Family bible, Jacobs.  

Jacobs Hiram

Hiram Jacobs and his wife Sophia had a daughter, Lulu Jacobs.  Lulu (or Lula) had a second husband, Conrad S. Tinsman.  For more information about Lulu, see “Tinsman, Conrad.”  Note:  the Jacobs Family Bible says Hiram married Eliza S. Childs.  Perhaps Hiram was married more than once?  

Jacobs Hiram

Hiram Jacobs of Milan was born at Raisinville March 19, 1835.  Heleft home at 16 to enter the blacksmith trade. He married Eliza Childs of Milan . They had 8 children, of whom five are now living (in 1890).  Mr. Jacobs enlisted in Co. I, 15th Mich. Inf. As a private. On April 6, 1862, he was wounded and discharged in July due to injuries. He lived on a farm of 40 acres until 1882, when he sold it and came to Milan (village). He is a member of Taylor Post, No. 274, G. A. R. of Milan .

Irving G. Jacobs was born in Milan July 24, 1877, son of Hiram and Eliza Jacobs.  His middle initial might not be “G” because it is hard to read. He was married Dec. 19, 1906. Source: Jacobs family Bible.

Irving F. Jacobs was born in Milan , MI on July 24, 1877 (note: could be 1899, hard to read) , son of Hiram and Eliza Jacobs. Married Dec. 19,1906.  Died 1940, Aug. 4?.  Jacobs Family Bible.

Lula  D. Jacobs was born in Milan , MI April 18, 1865, daughter of Hiram and Eliza Jacobs. Married June 13, 1885 [to Charles Ridley].  Died (blank). Jacobs family Bible.  

Jacobs, Lulu

Mrs. Lulu Tinsman, 87, of 41 Dexter St. , died at 6 p.m. yesterday [Oct. 13, 1952 is date on newspaper clipping] in the Beach Convalescent Home at Dundee .  Friends may call at the Stevens and Bush funeral home where services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Marble Park Cemetery . The daughter of Hiram and Sophia Jacobs, she was born April 15, 1865 at Milan . Her marriage to Charles Ridley was June 13, 1885, and they lived on a  farm near Milan . He died Jan. 20, 1919. Two children, Mabel and Elmer Ridley, also preceded her in death. She was married Jan. 14, 1925, to Conrad S. Tinsman at Milan and they lived in the home on Dexter St. He died March 4, 1950. Source: Monroe Evening News

Willard Jacobs was born in Milan May 19, 1860, son of Hiram and Eliza Jacobs. He was married April 2, 1889 and died Dec. 16, year illegible. Jacobs family Bible.

Harry Jacox (could it be Jacobs?) was in the “Metal Industries” business and lived at (residence not given) according to a Rotary club membership roster dated Jan. 4, 1949.  

Johnson

L. B. Johnson bought the Milan Leader in 1913 from Frank Gates.  He ran the paper until he died, then his wife Etta took it over.  In 1938 Etta died and their daughter Lucille Johnson DeRyke took over. 

Johnson Eleanor

Eleanor Johnson lived in Milan Township on the edge of Milan.  Her home had historical significance.  Her husband, Paul, was an electrician.  Eleanor had a daughter but was estranged from her.  Eleanor died in 2006.

Betha N. Kartje, age 74, died June 13, 1980, at Saline Evangelical Home. She was born Dec. 20, 1905 in Milan , daughter of LeRoy and Maude (VanWormer) Throop. She married Frank Kartje, Sr., on Jan. 20, 1951 in Milan ; he survives. She was employed by the American Foundry for over 20 years. Member of Milan Baptist church for 35 years, served as Sunday school teacher and church clerk. Survived by daughter, Mrs. Robert (Jean Sheats) Lucas of Mt. Clemens; two sons, Frank (and his wife Lois) Kartje, Jr., and Duane (and his wife Jane) Kartje, both of Milan ; etc.  Marble Park Cemetery .  

Katona Egnatius

Former Michigan resident and area racing champion Egnatius “Iggy” Katona, 87, died Dec. 4, 2003 in Daytona Beach . He was born Aug. 16, 1916 in Toldo, the son of Ignacz and Elizabeth (Papp) Katona. He is survived by two sons, Jim of S. Daytona, Fla , and ron (Betty) of Port Orange , Fla. , etc. Also four sisters, Helen Kondor, Threasa Shaw (sic), Bertha Hartmann, and Mary Margaret Katona; and two brothers, Tony (Marian) Katona and John Katona all of Mich. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Eleanor; his parents; a sister, Ann Hanson; and two brothers, Peter and Kelly Katona.  Katona, the winningest driver in the ARCA RE/MAX series history, earned 79 career series wins and held the all-time series championship mark with six titles. Etc.

Ignace Katona, 94, of 13995 Dennison Rd. , died Tuesday (April 5, 1983) at Saline Community Hospital .  The Rev. Joseph Strzelewicz will officiate. Burial at Marble Park Cemetery . He was born Oct. 15, 1888, in Hungary . He came to the US in 1903. He married Elizabeth Papp in 1910, in Defiance, Ohio . She died Aug. 6, 1945.  He had farmed most of his life and was the owner and operator of the Milan Specialty Foundry. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church.  Surviving are four sons, Ignatius of Lewiston, Kelly and Antal, both of Milan , and John of Belleville; 5 daughters, Mrs. Helen Kondor and Mrs. Bertha Hartmann, both of Milan , Mrs. Theresa Shaw and Margaret Katona, both of Manchester , and Mrs. Erling (Ann) Hansen of Ann Arbor; 22 grandhcildren.  He was preceded in death by a son, Peter.  Source: Monroe Evening News.  

Katona Kelly

Kelly Katona, age 78, died March 7, 1999 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital . He was born April 8, 1920 in Whitehouse , Ohio , the son of Ignace and Elizabeth (Papp) Katona On May 12, 1939 he married Marcella Zieske in Maybee and she survives. Kelly was a successful businessman with his brothers Peter and Antol Katona as owners of P K & A Foundry, Inc. in Milan . In addition, Kelly began a successful horse racing stable in 1960 which continues today. He also enjoyed farming, was a member of the Michigan Harness Horsemen’s Association, and the U.S. Trotting Association.  Surivers are his wife, daughter Donna (James) Carver of Milan; three brothers, Ignatius “Iggy” (Eleanor) of Florida, Antol (Marian) of Milan, and John of Belleville; four sisters, Helen Kondor, Bertha Hartmann, and Margaret Katona, all of Milan, and Theresa Shaw of Manchester, a sister-in-law,  Helen Katona of Milan; and brother-in-law, Erling Hansen of Ann Arbor. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Peter, and a sister Anna.  

Katona Peter

Age 63, Peter Katona died October 29, 1981. He lived at 13455 Petersburg Rd. , Milan . He was born June 1, 1918 in Ohio , the son of Ignace and Elizabeth (Papp) Katona. Peter Katona married Helen Kish Nov. 6, 1937 in Indiana . He served during World War II, then he and his two brothers, (Antol and Kelly) formed PK&A Foundry of Milan where he resides as president until his death. Peter was also owner and breeder of Tona Farms of Milan, a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Americaln Legion, and Loyal Order of theMoose. Surviving are two sons, Richard and George, and one daughter, Mrs. Hugh (Suzie) Bets; four brothers, Iggy of Lewiston, Kelly and Anto of Milan, John of Belleville; five sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Helen) Condor of Milan, Mrs. George (Theresa) Shaw of Manchester, Mrs. Erling (Anna) Hanson of Ann Arbor, Mrs. Frank (Bertha) Hartman of Milan and Margaret Katona of Manchester. Eliza Kellogg died June 18, 1842 at age 20 years, 9 months, 23 days. She was the wife of Hiram Kellogg. Buried in Cook cemetery.

Erastus Kellogg died Oct. 10, 1866 at age 71. He is buried in private Cook cemetery next to his wife Elizabeth, and two children, Harriet and Amos.

Harriet Kellogg, daughter of Erastus and Elizabeth Kellogg, died July 23,1837 at the age of 11 years, 8 months.  Buried in private Cook cemetery, York township.  See “Cook.”

Thomas S. Kellogg died Dec. 21, 1851 at the age of 10 years 2 months 25 days.  He is buried in Cook private cemetery. He was the son of Hiram and Eliza Kellogg.

Kerbawy Basil

Basil Kerbawy, a “General Missi’y Priest” solemnized two weddings within a day or two of each other in Blissfield in February 1914.  He officiated for Abraham J. Bassett and Rahija Saad on Feb. 2, 1914 and also for Albert H. Jamra, 23, born in Syria , and his wife Elizabeth Herbawy, 17, born in Ohio .  The groom was a merchant.  The bride’s father was George Herbawy. Witness:  Miles Bassit of Toledo and E. J. Nomey of Sturgis , Mich.   Lenawee marriage records.

R. Rogers

R. Rogers Kirby, M.D., had his residence in “Petersburgh” illustrated as a drawing in the 1876 Monroe County atlas.  

Kirkpatrick David

David Kirkpatrick, who moved to the village of Milan with his wife some three years ago and purchased property on Hurd St. , died Tuesday morning, aged 78 years. Besides a wife, he leaves five children, two being in Alaska . The funeral occurred Thursday at 10 o’clock from the house, Rev. H. A. Field officiating.  The burial took place in the London Cemetery .  SOURCE: Milan Leader April 26, 1901.  NOTE:  David Kirkpatrick was half brother of the famous George Custer of Monroe .  

Klump

Gusta Clump, 37, was married to George G. Meyers, 47, on Jan. 20, 1903. It was the second marriage for both of them.  He was a resident of Ash (twp), born in Raisinville, occupation farmer, parents George Meyers and Margaret Dumser.  She was a resident of Wyandott, born in Germany . Witnessed by Henriettta Klump of Wyandotte .  

Kondor Joseph

Joseph Kondor, 69, of 13905 Sanford Rd. , owner of a Milan foundry, died April 5 (1976). Funeral held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial Marble Park Cemetery . He was born Aug. 4, 1906, in Hungary , son of Joseph and Martha (Sezender) Kondor. He married Helen Katona in 1932, in Monroe .  He was the founder of Milan Specialty, Ypsilanti Aluminum and Milan Aluminum companies. He founded Milan Aluminum in 1946 which presebnty operates as Milan Cast Metal, which he owned with his two sons. He retired from the business in 1968.  Survived by wife; two sons, David and Donald of Milan; a brother Andrew of McKeesport, PA; eight sisters, most of PA and two of Ohio . He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Kondor, Jr., in 1952, and a brother, George. Source: Milan Booster.

Amos Lamkin was born in 1834 and died in 1911. He lived in Waltz, Mich. His burial place is unknown, perhaps in an overgrown cemetery in Waltz area. His father: James Wiley Lamkin. Mother: Maria Angel.  Wife of Amos Lamkin:  Caroline, born 1841. Children: Della Lamkin, b. 1860. Fredrick Lamkin, b. 1862. Lamkin Amos

Amos Lamkin was b. Feb. 1835. He was 65 years old when census taker stopped by. He had been married 44 yeears. He was a retired farmer. His son Fred was living in the home, b. July 1861, age 38, married 3 years, working as “common laborer.”  No mention of Amos’ wife living in the home. Location: Milan township, but not inside the Village of Milan .  

Lamkin Ames W.

Ames W. Lamkin, 46, a farmer, was b. in Mich. according to 1880 census of Milan Village , on the Monroe county side. He lived with his wife Caroline, 39; daughter Della, 20; son Fred, 18; son Willie, 15; son Eugene, 10; daughter Mary, 8; son Charles, 6; son James, 4; and son Harry, 2.   

Lamkin Angelina

Angelina Lamkin, b. 1816, was the daughter of Benjamin and Susannah Lewis Lamkin. She married on Jan. 18, 1835 at Pumpkin Hook, Dundee township. Angelina died June 9, 1895. Her husband #1 Jacob Brown, #2 James Anderson. Angelina was buried at Doty Cemetery .   

Lamkin Arleigh

Arleigh G. (Pete) Lamkin Jr., 51, of Jacksonville , FL , formerly of Monroe County , died Oct. 31 [1995] at his home. He was born March 1, 1944 in Ann Arbor , son of Arleigh and June Lamkin Sr.  Graduated 1962 from Dundee High School , then served 4 years in the Navy. He worked as a carpenter in Jacksonville . Surviving: his wife Iva; his parents of Dundee; two sons, Randy of Jacksonville and Kenneth of Orange Park, Fla; a daughter, Kimberly Lamkin of Jacksonville , and a brother, Robert C. Lamkin Sr. of Dundee . Source: Monroe Evening News obituary.  NOTE:  Iva was probably his second wife.  His first wife was Victoria L. Kuehnlein of Monroe , who died in Tennessee in 1983 after being shot in the chest.
