Warren Babcock had a guardian appointed by the Washtenaw Circuit Court in 1896 because the man had lost his mental faculties somehow. The guardian then sold the property containing the hotel. The buyer: Homer C. Sill, another Milan businessman. Date of sale: Feb. 24, 1896. Price: $61. The special guardian who sold the property was James Doyle, another downtown property owner. According to the deed, Babcock was “incompetent.” Liber 131, page 498. |

Warren Babcock lost a piece of property in downtown Milan due to a sheriff’s sale on Nov. 30, 1894. The Washtenaw Sheriff, William Judson, held the sale on the courthouse steps in Ann Arbor. The purchaser was Margaret Kearney, who paid $2,201.25. Warren Babcock managed to redeem the property as of Feb. 28, 1896. Property was a portion of Lot 2, Edwards Plat, exactly on the northeast corner of Main and Tolan-- “Babcock Hotel.” The original loan papers were signed May 12, 1885 by Warren Babcock, Mary A. Babcock, Frank Babcock and Effie Babcock, his wife, all residents of Milan. The Babcocks had borrowed $2,106.27 from Mary Kearney of Ann Arbor. Warren Babcock, farmer and stock-raiser, was born at Scipio, Cayuga Co., N. Y., Dec. 18, 1823, and a son of David and Electa (Daniels) Babcock, the former of whom was born in New York, in 1789. In 1853 he [David] came to Michigan, where he died Dec. 5, 1878. Warren first settled at Ypsilanti, and subsequently in Kent county, coming to his present residence [York twp] in 1880. He owns a quarter-section of land in sec. 34, valued at $45 per acre. He is Republican in politics, and a member of the Masonic order. He was married July 31, 1847, to Cordelia Twist. Six children were given them, four of whom are living-Katy, wife of George Jones; Frank, who was born Nov. 20, 1858; Cordelia, born Aug. 4, 1860; and Warren, Jr., born Sept. 15, 1836. Harriet, and Mary E., who married William A. Duress, are deceased. The latter left one child, Kittie. Mrs. [Cordelia] Babcock died, and Mr. B. was again married July 2, 1872, to Mary A. McKibbon. McKibben in Glasgow, Scotland on Sept. 23, 1833. At age 11 she sailed from Glasgow with her parents and landed in Canada. At age 16 she married William L. Markell and lived in Hamilton, CA. At age 30 she came to Michigan. She had 5 children: George, Robert, Daniel, and Sarah. She was 38 when she married Warren Babcock, (probably in 1871). Her third husband was George W. Eleazer Barnes of London Township, a retired farmer, was born June 10, 1807 at Pittsford, Vt. In 1833 he came to Michigan. November 21, 1833, he received a deed from Black Hawk Rankins of 80 acres of land. In 1835 he purchased 80 acres more, and erected one of the first frame houses in the township. (SE corner Plank and Allison Rd.) On Feb. 28, 1836 he married Calista Throop of London Township, who was born June 10, 1812. Four children were born to them. In 1838 Eleazer was made a member of the Monroe County board of supervisors. In 1851 Eleazer was a member of the state legislature for one term. His wife, Calista, died Nov. 11, 1863. Their son, Dorr Barnes, is a leading farmer in Milan, and has held several elected offices including Township Supervisor. (History of Monroe County 1913 page 26) |

There was also a daughter, Hattie, who died in infancy. Linn served as a private in the Civil War. He was wounded in the thigh. He was a member of the GAR in Milan. Linn applied for a military pension on May 18, 1912, at age 71. His application says he was 5’ 8” tall, brown hair, “black” eyes. He did receive the military pension. Linn died Feb. 22, 1924. Mell Barnes signed his name to stock certificates as president of the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Milan, starting on Feb. 10, 1890. On Jan. 26, 1895, Milan grocer William Whitmarsh took over as president of the bank. Mell Barnes then became entangled in the computing scale industry in and around Detroit in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. A founder of the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Milan, he was a Casheir of the bank. He later joined Walter Stimpson in the computing scales business, managing Stimpson’s plant in Elkhart, IN. The two eventually had an adversarial relationship in the courts due to a disagreement about the royalties from Stimpson’s scale patents. Note: Mell Barnes was not related to the Eleazer Barnes family in London township. |

Mell Barnes was born in Quincy, Michigan Nov. 16, 1861. His parents were Walton J. and Emily A. (Mudge) Barnes. He was probably not related to the Barnes family in London Township. Mell had various jobs at banks, and then in 1882 he went to Milan with Starr Joseph, another native of Quincy, and the two of them started the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Milan. He married Jessie O. Wilbur of Quincy on June 2, 1886. The family was living in Milan in 1890 when their son Walton was born. In 1893, Mell partnered with Walter F. Stimpson to manufacture computing scales. He took the business to Tecumseh in 1894. The next year, he set up the business in Elkhart, IN. He fought a legal battle with Stimpson, which he lost in Nov. 1900. Then he moved his family to Detroit and helped operate Stimpson’s Detroit facility. In 1914 he was general manager of Stimpson’s enterprises. He organized Barnes Scale Co. in 1920. Mell Barnes died in 1924. His son Walton continued running it after that. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Bassitt. His mother’s name was Anna Bassitt, maiden name not known. He came to the US and settled in Lawrence, MA in 1907. He came to Milan in 1911 and worked for the Ideal Furnace Co. for 3 years. He then went to Albin, (St. Albans) W. Va. Where he operated a dry goods store. While there he married Sadie Court on June 10, 1917. The couple lived in Albin until 1924 when they returned to Milan. Mr. Bassitt had owned and operated the Bassitt Five Cents to Five Dollars novelty store at 49 E. Main since 1924. He had been in poor heatlh for about 3 years. He was a Mason and an Odd Fellow. Minerva Bassett came to the US from Beirut when she was about 13-15 years of age. [Approx 1912] Her parents were wealthy clothing store owners in Beruit. Minerva’s mother sold jewelry and other things to raise the fare for Minerva to come to the US. Minerva came to the US to escape the unrest in Lebanon. We were Christians, not Muslims.
