Carlos
Allen died at his home May 21, 1898. He was born April 4,
1836, the son of Harmon and Clarissa Allen. He was born in
a log house standing on what was then the Bethuel Hack
farm, now (1898) owned by Henry Hack. This house stood in
a field now occupied by an apple orchard just west of Mr.
Hack’s horse barn. Carlos
Allen assisted his father on the farm during his youth and
young manhood. That farm is now occupied (1898) by R. C.
Allen. [probably his
brother Roscoe.] For his education, Carlos
attended the local district school and a few months at the
Ypsilanti
school. He
attended school at the old “red” school house at
Fryburg and in the village at the schoolhouse standing
where now stands the large brick residence of C. M.
Blackmer. He taught in the district schools for a time.
In April, 1860, he married Marla Winslow and
started farming near Raisinville.
He had two sons, Harmon W. and Charles J., and
daughter Clarissa L.
In 1863 he moved to his farm in
Milan
township. He enlisted in the 18th Mich Infantry in 1864
and served until the close of the war. He was an ardent
Republican. He did not attend church but believed
generally in the principals of Christianity.
