SPECIAL BIOGRAPHIES James Wyman James Wyman was born in 1831. He was the son of Asahel Wyman and Elizabeth Perry Wyman. On December 20, 1860, he married Adelaide S. Saunders. Adelaide was born April 5, 1842, the daughter of Rufus J. and Mary Ann (Harris) Saunders. James and Adelaide had three children. They had a daughter, Florence, whose birth date is not known. She married Captain Frank C. Corning. Frank was born March 17, 1853, and died February 7, 1922. Frank was the son of Daniel B. and Margaret (Goodwin) Corning. Frank’s mother Margaret was a widow of Theophillis Crosby 2nd, who died July 28, 1847. Another daughter of James and Adelaide was Addie L. Wyman. Addie married John Foster, who came from Swampscott, Massachusetts. The third child was William, who died young. According to a genealogical item in a Yarmouth newspaper, saved by Chester’s mother, James Wyman was a restauranteur. Here is an excerpt: "James Wyman’s name was known not only throughout the United States and the Dominion of Canada, but also abroad as a restauranteur. He began at Boston with what were known as Baked Bean houses, the leading of which were soon serving everything that could be desired in the way of a full meal. His eating places provided a mecca for the congregation of Yarmouthians, many of whom were living at Boston and the immediate surrounding towns where he also maintained branch restaurants. He was one of the most successful of any one in his line of business in America, of all time." In about 1993, Dorothy Mills Wyman asked her friend Marie Gavel to investigate the phone books of the time and learn more about the bean restaurants in the Boston area operated by James Wyman. The effort was unsuccessful. Marie wrote a note to Dot and George Wyman suggesting that the Boston Archives might have more information. James was the first cousin of George Wellington Wyman (b. 1836), the husband of Rebecca Eldridge. James’ father, Asahel, was a brother of William Wyman (1801-1837). James died September 20, 1898. His wife Adelaide died February 10, 1922.
Rebecca Eldridge Rebecca Eldridge was not an only child. She may have been born in 1842 according to typed notes by Joy Churchill. Rebecca had a sister, Mary, who married Henry Crowell. Mary and Henry had a daughter, Fannie Crowell. Joe, Jessie, and Herbert H. are brothers of Rebecca Eldridge, according to handwritten notes by Chester’s mother. Rebecca’s father was Capt. Joseph Eldridge. Her mother’s name was (?) Martha Eldridge. Capt. Joseph Eldridge once brought back a black resident to Yarmouth, from the West Indies. "The man made his home with Joseph’s brother Jessie and Martha Eldridge. Coming from a warm climate he minded the cold weather. An incident is told how he would crawl behind the stove to keep warm. He married Bertha Crosby and had 3 children Guy Earnest Virgil and Vera Mae who was very musical. Vera spent most of her life in Boston and spent vacations at home. She worked at the Mission. He died January 22, 1938."
