McLean Family

Martha McLean  SEE PHOTO

Martha McLean was born July 11, 1789 in Cambridge, New York. Her parents were Francis McLean and Mary Hill McLean.

On January 26, 1813, Martha McLean married William McKindley "Sr." Her husband was born November 8, 1786.  Martha and William had four children, John (1814-1887) Mary Ann (born around 1815 or 1816); Francis Lane (1817-1896); and William (1820-1847).  The youngest child, William, is our ancestor.

Martha's husband died in 1821 when Martha was 32 years old. Several years later, in 1825, she created a needlepoint sampler giving birthdates and other information about her parents and siblings. The needlepoint gives her name as "Martha McKindley."  SEE SAMPLER PHOTO.

Martha had a keen interest in farming and gardening.  She loved to hear about her children's fruit trees, what vegetables they were growing, and what farm animals they were raising.

She eventually remarried. Martha's second husband was John McAuley. She probably married him in 1830 or so. John McAuley already had two children by his first wife Eliza Freeman-- Sarah, born in approximately 1828, and Jane, born in approximately 1830. (Information from the 1850 census for Williamstown, N.Y. lists a John and Martha McAuley, both 62 years old, with two children, Sarah age 22 and Jane age 20.)  Martha had a child with John McAuley, Alexander McAuley, (1832-1911) of Williamstown, NY.   Alexander got married to a woman named Mary Mellen.  (Information from Ted McLean, the McLean family tree expert.)

Read a charming LETTER she wrote in 1850 to her son Francis in Michigan.

Martha died September 22, 1857. Her grave marker is in the old Turnpike Cemetery, in Cambridge, New York, where she is buried with her parents. The grave marker gives her name as Martha McLean McAuley.
