Sterling Sutherland and his wife Elma D. Pearl Sutherland

Sterling Sutherland was the grandson of Sterling Howard, who brought many of his extended family to Berrien County to purchase farmland prior to the Civil War.

This picture of Sterling and Elma is in our family album.  In addition to saying that this is Sterling and Elma Sutherland, the note also indicates that she is Rodney Pearl's sister, and that she had red hair!

I believe Elma D. Pearl is the daughter of Lewis "Major" Pearl, a well-known figure in Berrien County society at the time.  This photo of Sterling and Elma was taken at "Chapman & Son, Benton Harbor, Michigan."
