Jos. Sterling Howard and his wife Anna
Sterling Howard and his wife Anna

Joseph Sterling Howard ("Sterling") was the brother of John F. Howard.  Sterling was the leader in the family, bringing several brothers and one sister to Berrien County, Michigan, to try their hand at farming.  However after 10 or 15 years Sterling later left the state and went to live in Idaho.

Based on a biography of Lewis Sutherland, I believe that Sterling had 7 children, the oldest of whom was Matilda Howard.  I believe she was born in Illinois in 1843 and came with her parents to Berrien County, Michigan in 1847.  Matilda married Lewis Sutherland in Battle Creek in 1860 and had 6 children.
