John Churchill married Hannah Pontus December 18, 1644, in Plymouth, Massachusetts. They had six children. John came to the New World and became an indentured servant. He married well, because his wife was related to the colonial governor

CHILDREN OF JOHN AND HANNAH CHURCHILL:

  1. Joseph, born 1646 or 1647. Joseph was about 16 when his father, John Churchill, passed away. He worked as a farmer in Plymouth. He was married June 2, 1672 to Sarah Hicks, the daughter of Samuel and Lydia (Doeane) Hicks, and granddaughter of Robert Hicks. She was related to the Gov. Edward Winslow. Sarah Hicks was born in 1646 and died in 1688. The children of Joseph and Sarah Churchill were John, Margaret, Barnabas, Mercy, and Joseph.
  2. Hannah, born November 12, 1649. Married John Drew, grandson of Sir Edward Drew, knighted by Queen Elizabeth I. Hannah and John Drew had 6 children.
  3. Eliezer, born April 20, 1652. He married his first wife, Mary, and had six children. Then he remarried on February 8, 1688 to Mary Doty, and had five more children. Mary Doty died December 11, 1715, at the age of 60. Eliezer died about 1716.
  4. Mary, born August 1, 1654. In about 1672, when she was 18, she became pregnant by her boyfriend, Thomas Dotey. It was a crime at that time to get pregnant without a husband, as described in a book, "The Scarlet Letter." Mary was put in jail. Her brother Joseph, together with her boyfriend’s brother, John Drew, posted bond for Mary while she awaited judgment. She was sentenced to a whipping and she was also fined six shillings. She sued her boyfriend for desertion, and the local court awarded her a large chunk of Tom’s property. When faced with the loss of his property, Tom decided to marry his old girlfriend. They had a second child together, but it was not to last-- Mary died at age 21. Her husband Tom remarried and had another child, then he died soon after on Dec. 4, 1678.
  5. William, born 1656, died October 5, 1722. He married Lydia Bryant, who died Feb. 6, 1736 at age 74. There were eight children.
  6. John, born 1657. John "Jr." married Rebecca Delano on Dec. 28, 1686, and had five children. Then Rebecca died April 6, 1709 at age 52. He remarried March 4, 1715 to Mrs. Hannah Bartlett, who died April 29, 1723 at age 61. John "Jr." died a couple of months later, on June 13, 1723, at age 66.

[HISTORICAL NOTE:  The Salem Witch trials took place in 1692-1694.]
