CAPT. WILLIAM CHURCHILL
and descendants

Capt. William Churchill

William Churchill was born May 29, 1822. William was the son of Capt. Thomas Churchill and Mary Harris.

William married Sarah Crosby. Sarah died March 19, 1942.

William and Sarah had the following children:

  1. Lois Churchill, born September 27, 1849. On July 4, 1874, she married Capt. Aaron F. Churchill, the "famous sea captain."
  2. Norman Budd Churchill, born August 9, 1852. On December 19, 1882, Norman married Annie Tedford. They had six children.
  3. Mary A. Churchill, born July 30, 1866.

While on one of his journeys by sea, William purchased a large family Bible. He bought it in Dublin on February 20, 1871. He apparently wanted to do some genealogy work of his own, because he marked the first page "deaths" and listed his parents, Thomas and Mary, and then all his sisters and brothers, in birth order. In front of each name was the person’s date of birth, and afterwards, the date of death. This Bible is currently in the possession of William’s great-grandson in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

According to a clipping from the Yarmouth newspaper, Capt. William Churchill was the township treasurer in Yarmouth for many years.

William died on either January 11, 1890, or December 11, 1879. (Compare the family Bible passed down to William’s great-grandson in Yarmouth, and the family tree chart.)

Norman Budd Churchill

Norman B. Churchill was born August 9, 1852. His father was William Churchill, a sea captain who was born May 29, 1822, and died January 11, 1890. Norman’s mother was Sarah Crosby, who died March 10, 1942.

Norman’s older sister, Lois, b. Sept. 27, 1849, became the wife of Capt. Aaron Churchill, the famous sea captain who built ships in Savanah, Georgia. Norman also had a younger sister, Mary A. Churchill, who was born July 30, 1866.

Norman married Annie (or Angie Louise) Tedford on December 19, 1882. They had six children (SEE PHOTO) as follows:

  1. Lotta (or Lottie) May Churchill, born May 18, 1885. Married Armand Rainey. Died May 24, 1971.
  2. William B. Churchill. Born December 5, 1886. Died, suicide, on Nov. 15, 1920.
  3. Aaron Flint Churchill, born March 28, 1889. Died October 15, 1967.
  4. Mame Agusta Churchill. Born March 28, 1892. Her children were Lotta Lois Bethune, born May 27, 1927, and Alvin Eugene Churchill Bethune, born May 9, 1929. "Mamie" died Nov. 11, 1958.
  5. Chester King Churchill. He was born July 28, 1893 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. He left Canada for Michigan, where he received his engineering degree from University of Detroit. His cousin Wilfred Churchill followed Chester to Michigan, where they remained lifelong friends. Chester married Anne Blakney.  They had two daughters; one who is still living, and Patricia Anne Churchill (born April 10, 1929; died Oct. 11, 1995). Chester worked for General Motors. He died Sept. 5, 1971 and is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in either Wayne or Oakland County, Michigan.
  6. John Clement Churchill. Born January 18, 1895. He had a son, William Henry Churchill, born Oct. 22, 1926. John died Sept. 27, 1957.

Annie Tedford apparently is the person listed in Norman Churchill’s family Bible as having died February 9, 1898. After Annie’s death, Norman B. Churchill married twice more. The second wife was ___ Moses. His third wife was Mary Hardy.

Norman B. Churchill died March 10, 1942.

Aaron F. Churchill

Aaron Flint Churchill was born March 28, 1889. He was the third child of Norman Budd Churchill and Annie Tedford.

Aaron had three children:

  1. Son, still living, born 1915. For information about his wife's family tree, click on ZACCHEUS
  2. Son, born January 29, 1917.
  3. Verna Isabel Churchill. Born January 24, 1922. Died Feb. 25, 2002.

Aaron F. Churchill died October 15, 1967. His wife, Leta M. Churchill, died August 6, 1975.
