LARKIN FAMILY HISTORY

 

Walter Larkin and Elizabeth Ann Gilford

Walter Larkin was born in 1728. He died on about March 25, 1795. He was married on March 19, 1761 to Elizabeth Ann Gilford. The wedding took place in Danvers, Mass. They had nine children. The family moved to Pubnico, Nova Scotia, Canada where many people with the last name "Larkin" now live.

Their children were:

  1. John Larkin. Born Feb.11, 1762. He was married Feb.3, 1790 to Mary Belliveau.
  2. William Larkin. Born.Mar.11, 1763. On Dec.30, 1794 he married Rebecca Cook. Rebecca was the daughter of Ephraim and Louisa (Ring) Cook, a Mayflower descendant. Rebecca was born May 13, 1770 and died June 20, 1857.
  3. Elizabeth Larkin, born Sept.19, 1764.
  4. Benjamin Larkin, born May 17, 1767. He married Sarah Sollows on December 11, 1794. Sarah was the daughter of John and Anna Sollows.
  5. Joseph Larkin. He was born Oct. 24, 1769. He married Eunice Nason on Oct.13, 1793. Eunice was the daughter of Aaron and Margaret (Goodwin) Nason.
  6. Stephen Larkin.  He was born June 1, 1771 and died June 1853. On Dec.28, 1796 he married Ruth Cook. Ruth was the daughter of Ephraim and ?Louisa (Ring) Cook. Ruth Cook Larkin was born in 1778 and died on October 11, 1839.  (Their daughter Mary became a Wyman by marriage.)
  7. Reuben Larkin, born Nov. 27, 1772. On March 29, 1801 Reuben married Ann Hart (or Jones). Ann was born in 1777 in New York. She died Sept.1, 1858.
  8. David Larkin. He was born Jan. 4, 1776. He married Lydia Cook on March 29, 1801. Lydia was born in 1779 and died November 27, 1850.
  9. Mary Larkin. She was born Sept. 9, 1779 and died in 1850. She was married on August 27, 1809 to Stephen Smith. Stephen. Smith was born December 15, 1764 and died May 23, 1826. Stephen Smith was the son of Archelaus and Elizabeth (Nickerson) Smith. They are the ancestors of Herbert R. Quinlan, a genealogist who lives in Nova Scotia. He provided significant information about the Larkin and Doane ancestry.

Stephen and Ruth Larkin

Stephen Larken was born June 1, 1771 and died June 1853. His parents were Walter and Elizabeth Larkin.

On Dec.28, 1796 he married Ruth Cook. Ruth was the daughter of Ephraim and ?Louisa (Ring) Cook. Ruth Cook Larkin was born in 1778 and died on October 11, 1839.

Stephen and Ruth Larkin had the following Children:

  1. Lydia Larkin, born Aug.23, 1797. She died in a drowning accident in the Chebogue River on Oct. 8, 1822.
  2. John Larkin. He was born March 23, 1800 and died July 15, 1885. He married Elizabeth Kinney. Elizabeth, the daughter of ?Thomas and Lydia (Bartlett) Kinney, was born in 1804.
  3. Ruth Larkin. She was born May 22, 1802 and died Dec.17, 1891. She married Ebenezer Ricker.
  4. Sarah Larkin, born Oct.15, 1804.
  5. Mary Larkin, born Nov.15, 1806. Her first husband was William Wyman. William was the son of James Wyman and Druscilla (Doane) Wyman. They had seven children (see Wyman Family Information for names). Mary’s second husband was ?Abner V. Vickery.
  6. Rebekah Larkin, born Aug.18, 1808. She married John Allen. John was born in January 1808 and died October 13, 1887. John was the son of Joseph and Sarah (Coffran) Allen.
  7. Deborah Larkin. She was born May 11, 1811. She was married on Feb.7, 1841 to Lyman Allen, a son of Joseph and Sarah (Coffran) Allen. Lyman was born in 1813 and died September 19, 1874.
  8. Barak J.S. Larkin. He was born May 11, 1811 and died November 18, 1849 or 1850. He married Eleanor Cahoon. Eleanor was born in 1812. She was the daughter of Reuben and Clarissa (Doane) Cahoon.
  9. Stephen Larkin. Born June 7, 1813; died February 1, 1894. He was married to Jennie Buker on July 5, 1884. Jennie was born in 1857. Note: This is the Stephen Larkin who left Nova Scotia to seek gold in California in 1849. He stayed in California. While in his 70’s, he married a widow with three children, who tried to poison him when he refused to write a Will in favor of her children, according to a newspaper article about his life.
  10. Amos Cook Larkin. He was born June 7, 1813 and died Oct.17, 1899. His first wife was Mary Crosby. Mary was born in 1819 and died Feb. 27, 1864. Mary was the daughter of Jonathan Crosby. Amos married his second wife on November 26, 1868. Her name was Lydia Sims. Lydia was born 1821, the daughter of George and Zilpha Sims.
  11. William Larkin, born 1814, died Dec.9, 1896. William married Maria Larkin. Maria’s parents were David and Lydia (Cook) Larkin. Maria was born September 10, 1822 and died July 13, 1905.
  12. Elizabeth Larkin, born Mar.8, 1818.

William Wyman and Mary Larkin

William Wyman was the son of James Wyman and Druscilla Doane Wyman.

William was married to Mary Larkin.

Mary Larkin was born Nov. 15, 1806. She was the daughter of Stephen Larkin and Ruth (or Louisa) Ring Cook. Ruth Cook was a Mayflower descendant.

William and Mary Wyman had seven children, as follows:

  1. Stephen L. Wyman, born January 30, 1827. He married Hannah Vickery, the daughter of Moses Vickery. He had ten children.
  2. William Henry Wyman. Born July 15, 1829. According to a genealogy book, he was married in the United States. Apparently his kids inherited money from William’s maternal uncle, Stephen Larkin, who had made his fortune in California following the gold rush, as described in a Yarmouth newspaper article about the uncle. The newspaper article says William’s kids were in Nova Scotia.
  3. Ruth Anne Wyman. Born June 17, 1831. She married Nathan Churchill, the son of Capt. Thomas Churchill.
  4. John Wyman. Born September 30, 1833.
  5. George Wellington Wyman. Born December 19, 1836. He was married in 1864 to Rebecca Eldridge, the daughter of Joseph Eldridge. According to a genealogy book, the wedding took place Sept. 21, 1864, but a family Bible belonging to Chester says the wedding was Sept. 4. [NOTE: George is the ancestor of Chester Wyman, M.D., of Yarmouth, N.S.]. George died May 16, 1902.
  6. Mary D. Wyman. Born Sept. 3, 1839. She was married on November 30, 1856 to Capt. Samuel Tedford, the son of Milford Tedford.
  7. Lydia Wyman. Born Sept. 3, 1839, twin sister of Mary. Lydia never married. According to a Yarmouth newspaper article about her uncle, Stephen Larkin, it appears Lydia inherited money from this uncle after he made a fortune in California following the gold rush.

 

DOANE FAMILY TREE

Rev. Samuel Osborn and his wife, Jedidah Smith

Samuel and Jedidah Smith had a daughter, Elizabeth Smith, who was baptized in 1733 or 1734. Elizabeth was married three times.

Elizabeth Smith and Edmund Doane

Elizabeth Smith was the daughter of Samuel and Jedidah Smith. Elizabeth was baptized January 1, 1715 or 1716 in Sandwich, Mass.

Husband #1:

She was married January 23, 1733 or 1734 in Eastham, Mass. To her first husband, William Myrick, son of Nathaniel Myrick. They had three children: William, born in 1734; Gideon; and Elizabeth, born 1742, probably in Boston. Elizabeth Myrick is the ancestor of Herbert R. Quinlan of Nova Scotia, who contributed a significant amount of information about the Doane and Larkin family trees.

Husband #2:

The second husband was William Paine, son of John Paine. That marriage took place in Eastham on January 15, 1744. Elizabetha nd John had a son, William, born in 1746.

Husband #3:

The third husband was Edmund Doane, son of Israel and Ruth (Freeman) Doane.

Elizabeth was well known for her medical knowledge and was asked to stay in Barrington, Nova Scotia as there were no doctors in the area. She gained her knowledge of medicine from one of her brothers who was a doctor.

Elizabeth and Edmund Doane had seven children all born in Eastham, Nova Scotia. They resided in Barrington, Nova Scotia. They were as follows:

  1. Israel Doane. He was born December 20,1750 and died February 1, 1844 in Argyle. He married Desire Nickerson. Their daughter Druscilla married James Wyman.
  2. Samuel Osborn Doane, born June 7, 1752. He died Feb. 21, 1824 in Barrington. Samuel married Sarah Harding. Note: Samuel was the one who wrote down all the Births, Deaths, and Marriages in the area, then carried on by his son of the same name, and if it wasn't for him we wouldn't have a lot of great information about the family trees.)
  3. Prence Doane. Born September 14, 1753. Died in September 1779 in a drowning accident.
  4. Jedidah Doane. Born December 8, 1754. Died August 27, 1835. Jedidah married Ansel Crowell (ancestor of Herbert R. Quinlan, through their daughter Elizabeth who married Daniel Penney).
  5. Ruth Doane. Born April 7, 1756. Died September 27, 1835. Ruth married Herman Kenney, an ancestor of Herbert R. Quinlan.
  6. Abigail Doane. Born April 18, 1758, died June 23, 1867. Abigail married Hezekiah Smith, son of Archelaus and Elizabeth (Nickerson) Smith (ancestor of Herbert R.Quinlan)
  7. Edmund Doane. Born Sept.14, 1759, died Jan.1847. He married Tamsin Hamilton.

Israel and Desire Doane

Israel Doane was born December 20,1750 and died February 1, 1844 in Argyle. He was the son of Edmund Doane and Elizabeth Smith.

Israel married Desire Nickerson. Their daughter Druscilla married James Wyman on December 19, 1788. Druscilla and James Wyman had about a dozen children, including William Wyman, who married Mary Larkin.
