His mother’s name was Ruth Anne Wyman. He had one brother, Nathan. Nelson married Margaret Lamont December 20, 1891. Margaret had come to Nova Scotia from Scotland. Nelson worked as a school teacher, minister, and surveyor. Nelson and Margaret had five children, including Wilfred Churchill. Here is a list of their children:
Nelson died April 7, 1922. He is buried at the Churchill Cemetery in Short Beach, Nova Scotia (near Yarmouth). Malcolm Oscar Churchill SEE PHOTO Malcolm was born February 24, 1893, the son of Nelson and Margaret Churchill. He served in the Canadian military. He managed to survive tuberculosis, at least for a while. He married Myrtle Bieglo on January 12, 1918. SEE PHOTO. (Myrtle died at the age of 62-- her daughter does not know Myrtle’s year of birth or year of death.) Malcolm and Myrtle had three children: SEE PHOTO
Malcolm's occupation: unknown.. Malcolm was in a hospital for tuberculosis shortly before he died. SEE PHOTO. He died of that disease in approximately 1929 while his family was living in Highland Park, Michigan. Margaret Lamont (Churchill) SEE PHOTO Born in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1864. Her parents were Hugh and Jane Lamont. She had three sisters and two brothers. One of her brothers, (Mather?) Matthew, came to Nova Scotia, Canada from Scotland in the early 1880’s. In 1885 he bought 300 acres of land. Margaret Lamont followed her brother to Nova Scotia in 1886. Margaret kept a little gold locket with a picture of an older woman and a baby. It seems likely that the picture in the locket is Margaret's mother, Jane. Click on LOCKET to view. Margaret married the local schoolmaster, Nelson Churchill, on December 20, 1891 at Short Beach, Nova Scotia. Rev. J. A. Smith, a Methodist minister, officiated. She had five children, Malcolm, Jean, Nathan, *Wilfred, and Randolph. Later in her life, Margaret lived with Randolph and Eva at various times, and with Dr. Margaret Churchill. SEE PHOTO. She lived with her son Wilfred for one winter. SEE PHOTO. She was wonderful with knitting and crochet. She also made woolen rag rugs. Margaret Lamont Churchill died March 28, 1959 of a heart attack at age 95. Her funeral was held at a Baptist church. She is buried at Darling’s Lake Cemetery.
Mather "Matthew" LaMont Matthew LaMont may have been born "Mather Lamont" and changed his name later in life to Matthew. He was born in Scotland on October 8, 1859. He was one of six children. Margaret LaMont, wife of Nelson Churchill, was one of his sisters. His other three sisters and one brother were living in England by the time Matthew died in 1929. Matthew came to Nova Scotia in the 1880’s and came to Yarmouth in 1885 where he purchased a farm. Matthew had a child, Alexander, who was born October 27, 1894. The child’s mother worked as a housekeeper for Matthew, and then disappeared. Matthew started to raise the child alone. A census of Port Maitland in 1891, before Alexander’s birth, lists Matthew as being 30 years old and a Presbyterian. When the census was done in 1901 it listed Matthew as being age 41, a Unitarian, and a farmer. Is it possible the Presbyterian church did not look kindly on Matthew after he had a child by his housekeeper? According to his obituary, Matthew was an expert in raising sheep. He enjoyed reading books and was known as "a ready conversationalist on many topics" and "a ready debater." When Alexander was less than 7 years old, Matthew got a wife, Emma Louise Muller, from Switzerland through an advertisement. Emma was born October 3, 1868, daughter of David and Betina Muller. Emma did not like Alexander. When the boy was about 16 or 17, he told his dad he was leaving, and Matthew gave him a gold watch. Alexander went to East Lynn, Massachusetts, where he enlisted in the Army and served in World War I. He then married and had a daughter. His daughter has three children, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Matthew died of pneumonia January 15, 1929 at his home in Short Beach, several weeks after a heart attack. He was buried at Darling’s Lake Cemetery. His obituary says absolutely nothing about his son, Alexander. I would guess that his widow, Emma, wrote the obituary, and she didn't want to mention the boy. By the time Emma died on May 20, 1949, she must have had some additional family in America because she left behind a nephew, Albert Muller of Olympia, Washington, and a niece, Mrs. Marie G. Doyle of New York. Nathan Churchill (I) Born October 12, 1832, Nathan Churchill is listed on a family tree as being a "farmer." He was the son of Thomas and Mary Churchill. Nathan married Ruth Anne Wyman on November 9, 1857. (Ruth Anne was born June 17, 1831, the daughter of William and Mary Larkin Wyman. She died April 26, 1911.) Nathan Churchill died of cancer of the liver and bowels, on July 29, 1879, at the age of 46 and 10 months. The children of Nelson and Ruth Anne Churchill were as follows:
Ruth Anne Wyman Churchill She was born June 17, 1831, the daughter of William Wyman and Mary Larkin. She married Nathan Churchill on Nov. 9, 1857. SEE PHOTO. There is a family picture album with a photo of a woman, identified as "Grandma Churchill’s sister Elizabeth Halliday." The note was written by Jean Lamont Churchill, so it seems to be a sister of Ruth Ann Wyman, but more likely it refers to a sister of Margaret Lamont, who knows? Ruth Anne was the third of seven children. The others were Stephen L., born January 30, 1827; William Henry, born July 15, 1829; John, born Sept. 30 1833; George W., born December 19, 1836 (SEE PHOTO); and Mary D. and Lydia, twins, born Sept. 3, 1839. Thomas Churchill was born June 6, 1791, the son of Ephraim and Asenath Churchill. He was a sea captain. On Nov. 12, 1815, he married Mary Harris. Mary Harris died of "inflammation" (old age) on January 2, 1890, at the age of 95. Thomas died Nov. 7, 1847 from injuries received in a shipyard in Yarmouth Town. He donated land for Darling’s Lake Cemetery, where he and Mary are buried in Lot 37. Thomas and Mary had eight children, as follows:
